Day Trips from Tucson
Living in Tucson means Southern Arizona is your weekend. Everything below is under two hours — most of it under one.
Mt. Lemmon — 1 hour, 30 degrees cooler
The Catalina Highway climbs from saguaros to pine forest and the little town of Summerhaven. Skiing in winter (the southernmost ski area in the continental U.S.), hiking and pie in summer. The single most-used escape in local life.
Bisbee & Tombstone — 1¼–1½ hours
Pair them: Tombstone for the OK Corral mythology in the morning, Bisbee — a Victorian mining town turned arts colony stacked into a canyon — for the afternoon. Bisbee is the one locals actually return to.
Sonoita & Elgin wine country — 1 hour
Arizona's original wine country: high-desert grasslands, tasting rooms, and Patagonia nearby for world-class birding at the Paton Center and Patagonia Lake.
The close ones
Kartchner Caverns (~50 min) — a pristine living cave, reservations recommended. Tubac (~45 min) — Arizona's oldest European settlement, now an artists' colony. San Xavier del Bac (20 min) — the White Dove of the Desert, a Spanish colonial mission still in use; not really a day trip, just mandatory. Colossal Cave and Old Tucson fill easy half-days on each side of town.
